On this day, August 19, 1964, the Beatles played the first show of their Summer North American tour at the cavernous Cow Palace in Daly City, California — right on the border of San Francisco. They had previously played just three cities in the U.S. for their Winter tour (New York, Washington, and Miami), surrounding their historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964.
An audience of 17,130 screaming girls and boys attended the Cow Palace concert, where the Fab Four played just 12 songs (which was the set list for the entire tour):
