Titan of the Telecaster and country-jazz master Jim Campilongo is returning from New York to his Bay Area roots for this special single show on the last Wednesday in June. Campilongo’s name is super familiar to Guitar Player readers. He’s a Consulting Editor whose Vinyl Treasures column offers insights on his favorite guitar albums, and his own lauded recording output includes myriad solo releases as well as recording credits with the likes of Norah Jones and Cake.
Campilongo will have his New York-based trio in tow for this show featuring upright bassist Chris Morrissey, who has held musical directorships with Sara Bareilles and Trixie Whitley, and drummer Josh Dion, whose list of world-class collaborators includes Wayne Krantz, Gregg Allman, Bill Evans, and Warren Haynes. Campilongo says he’s never felt freer to improvise.
“Wherever I go, they’re right there with me,” he reports.
That’s saying a lot, as Campilongo is a fearless improviser willing to turn a song or a show around at the drop of a dime, or, perhaps the drop of a tuning peg. No one gets more mileage out of on-the- fly peg twists or behind-the- nut bends than the twang mutant with his trusty Tele feeding a Fender Princeton. Fender honored Campilongo with a signature Telecaster in 2013, and he’s the cat Fender puts in video product releases for tonal reference when there’s a new Princeton reissue to promote.
