Google has confirmed that the Pixel[1] and Pixel XL[2], its first self-branded smartphones, will continue to receive major Android updates[3] till October 2018, and important security updates for another year after that. The devices have been added to a list of devices[4] with official end-of-life dates on Google's support website.

This would give both devices an effective upgrade window of two years from the time that they were first launched. They will be eligible to receive the Android O[5] update after it releases later this year, and apparently the next major version after that. Users can continue to use their Pixel or Pixel XL phones till October 2019 with the assurance that they will receive patches to prevent against threats and vulnerabilities discovered up to that point, but after that, there is no guarantee of compatibility.

Last year, Google[6] had indicated that the Pixel devices would receive updates for two years[7]. The Nexus 6P[8] and Nexus 5X[9] which launched in 2015 will receive updates till September 2017 and security patches till September 2018.
