There's no denying it. WIRED readers love stories of the pomaceous variety. News about Apple or Apple products accounted for half a dozen of our 17 most-read Gear stories of the year, and for good reason: this year, the company celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the iPhone, the personal product that inarguably changed the world. Apple marked the occasion by releasing the iPhone X[1], a device decked out with new features like facial recognition[2], a bezel-less screen[3], and, to be blunt about it, talking poop[4].
The company's influence webs out so far it could also be felt in at least another four stories, including one about the Essential, a phone we billed as "the Anti-iPhone."
But while it was a year of hellos—to the iPhone X and the Essential—2017 also saw its share of goodbyes—to Flash, to Google's blob emoji, to the iPod, and, again, thanks to Apple, to wired headphones.
